Reactor-88’s Custom Corner -- Godhay

[Welcome to the July 2016 edition of Reactor-88's Custom Corner. This month we’re featuring Godhay.]

What’s your name?

My name is Jaume Bertran, but in the art toy scene it is Godhay.

Where are you located?

I live in Vallromanes, a very small town that’s a 15 minute drive from Barcelona.

Day job or full-time artist?

I would love to be a full-time artist, but I guess that I could not pay all my debts and bills so I need a day job. I’m an architect who does not exercise since 2008 due to the economic crisis, that’s the reason why I got recycled and started with my own business, a supermarket.

Any random things you want people to know about you?

My passion is architecture- focusing on the architecture from the end of the 19th century until 1930, the Art Nouveau and Art Deco period. As you may know, Barcelona has a lot of buildings from that period- that is where my liking started. You can find me walking in random European cities taking photos of buildings and visiting museums.

 

I started collecting art toys in 2004. I liked Toy2r Qees and collected a great number of them, but set them aside in order to dedicate to another of my collections... Playmobil and Lego! Nine years later I rediscovered the art toy world and started collecting toys again- especially Dunnys, Coarse, and ThreeA.

How long have you been painting toys?

My sister visited the NY Kidrobot store and bought for me a pair of Dunny blind boxes, that’s the point where I restarted collecting toys. My first custom was a blue Dunny mosaic on September 2013. After that, I started customizing toys regularly. Unfortunately I have a job that does not give me much spare time, but I try to work on my customs during the weekend.

Anything specific you’d like people to know about your toy work (style, influences, special techniques, etc.)?

I have a very defined style. You’ll always find the mosaic in all my customs in more or less quantity. I don’t like to work with an airbursh, I prefer hand painting. I only use my airbrush for color base or varnish.

Do you take commissions?

Yes I do! But I’ve got to say that if you order a commission, you have to be patient with me. As I said, I don’t have much spare time so my customs take quite a long time to finish, sorry!
