Reactor-88’s Custom Corner – David Stevenson
Welcome to the November 2016 edition of Reactor-88's Custom Corner. This month we’re featuring David Stevenson.
What’s your name?
My name is David Stevenson.
Where are you located?
I am based in South London in the U.K. and have been for the last 6 years.
Day job or full-time artist?
I feel very lucky and honored to be a full time artist. I do also dabble a little in graphic and product design (if anyone is interested in sending me some work.)
Any random things you want people to know about you?
- Before I became a full time artist, I was a musician (singer/songwriter) for about 10 years and always saw my future in music. I do still play a little but just for fun these days.
- I own a 2 year-old Beagle named Dexter and I always start my day early with a long walk/run/scavenge with him. He really helps to put things in perspective and clear my mind for the day ahead. He is also more “famous" than me, as he has his own Instagram (@dexter_thebeagle)
- I don’t only work on vinyl toys. I paint on canvas, old vinyl records, spray cans, anything I can get my hands on really. I love combining old discarded products with new artwork. I suppose thanks to vinyl toys I now see most things as a potential canvas. I’m currently working on a custom coffee table for my own home.
How long have you been customizing/painting toys?
I have been painting toys for 5 years.
Anything specific you’d like people to know about your toy work (style, influences, special techniques, etc.)?
I'm becoming most known for my jungle and floral themed customs, such as my Jungle Reapers, as I take a lot inspiration from nature and the weird and wonderful creatures that still inhabit the ever shrinking jungles and forests of our world. This along with how I feel the natural world wants to fight back against the way we treat it and the environment. With this in mind I am also trying to evolve these themes.
Technically, my style of work usually incorporates crisp, bold colors with intricate line work. I hand paint with acrylics and after roughing out an idea, I paint free hand from scratch so no two pieces are ever alike, even if they have similar color schemes.
Do you take commissions?
Yes, commissions are always welcome.
